The "Release Candidate" will be released to the general public on May 5th. I would recommend getting that, you can use it for a year for free which gives you plenty of time to be sure you like it before you pay $99 for an upgrade.

The final "pay for it" release version is a bit up in the air right now. They were originally talking about 1st quarter 2010, but they have really ramped up the process, reviews of Seven are really good, and there are rumors now that they may release it in the early fall or even late summer.

They really want to put Vista behind them as soon as they can. I thought Vista was really good and 100% better than XP, but they just got off on the wrong foot with a lot of driver incompatibilities and problems with legacy applications in the early days (the first 6 months or so) and it left a bad taste in folks mouths. Everything works great with Vista now of course (it has been out for 2+ years), but you only get one chance at an initial impression and they blew it.

There won't be the same problems with Seven, as it is based on Vista but with all the lessons learned from Vista addressed. They are guaranteeing that "if it runs on Vista, it will run on Seven - including Vista device drivers". As for those moving from XP, there are Vista drivers for just about everything now, and native Seven drivers all ready in beta for many things. (I have them for nVidia and Creative) So the only things that are going to be a challange are a few REALLY old devices like scanners from 1999 and such.

I really recommend going to Seven either now (why not?) or when it releases in the fall. Sure, there will be some learning curve issue for those moving from XP, but you can't use that 9 year-old operating system forever, and the sooner you get used to the minor differences (mostly in where things are found) the sooner you can stop hearing "I don't remember how you do that in XP, who uses XP anymore?" when you ask a technical question.

I would do it now. I can't for the life of me think of a single reason not to.

If you are on Vista already, you will have almost no learning curve, as it isn't that much different, just better. There really is NO reason not to go for it...

If you are on XP, you have a decision to make. If you are scared to death of computers and just use what you got when you bought the computer with no idea how to set things up, you might as well wait. Not for Seven to release, but for the next time you buy a new computer. It will come pre-installed with Seven and you won't have to install it or do any configuring. If you are comfortable with working with the operating system, you should get off of XP as soon as possible. Seven is just so much better.
